Friends Who Have Lost Pets

If you are not a pet owner but have pet-owning friends and you are unsure as to what you should do when one of those pets dies, you'll be pleased to know that you have many options. Firstly, it is important to note that whatever you do, it will always be the gesture of caring that will count the most.

Although some people can tolerate pet loss well, most will be quite distressed, especially if the pet was a longtime companion. It is appropriate to show a bereaved friend that you understand their loss if you feel that it will help them through the grieving process in some way. The nature of your expression of condolences should depend upon the nature of your relationship with the owner. In some instances a note of condolence will suffice; on other occasions it may be more appropriate to visit or to arrange a contribution to a charity that is battling the disease that caused the death of the pet.

Other ideas:

  • Send a SympathE-Card
  • Send flowers
  • Plant a tree
  • Build a commemorative web site
  • Offer to help with funeral services
  • Be supportive and caring by offering to listen
