Summer
Daze
In this Canadian
climate, we all crave sun and surf in the summer, but our pets
need shade and water. Without it they can overheat, becoming ill
and sometimes die of heat. If you leave your pet in the car on
a hot day or in the yard without shade and water you are risking
your animal's life!
Symptoms
of Heat Stroke:
-
Excessive
panting and salivation
-
Vomiting,
anxious or staring expression
-
Fast pulse
rate
-
High body
temperature
-
Weakness
and lack of coordination
-
Muscle
tremors
If your pet
displays any of these symptoms, act quickly! Immerse the pet in
tepid water or pour the water over the animal. As soon as the
animal cools off slightly, take it to the veterinarian immediately.
Prevention:
-
Never
leave a pet alone in a vehicle. Even with the windows slightly
open, if the temperature outside reaches 30 degrees Celsius,
the inside temperature can reach 45 degrees in just 30 minutes.
-
If your
pet is left outside on warm days, always provide access to
a shaded area (remember the sun moves), and plenty of cool
drinking water.
-
Strenuous
activity and long walks should be avoided on hot days. When
away from home, always carry water and make sure the animal
gets small amounts frequently.
-
Consider
a "summer cut" for dogs with heavy long coats. However, make
sure that your dog doesn't get sunburnt!
By taking
these precautionary steps both you and your pet will be able to
safely enjoy the summer's sun.
When it comes
to health care for your pet, you don't want to have to compromise.
However, the cost of advanced treatment can be high. Pet insurance
can help ease the financial burden, helping owners make an immediate
decision to proceed with expensive testing or treatment.
