Choosing A Pet Sitter

As much as we love the companionship and presence of our pets, every now and then comes a time when taking Fluffy along with us is just not feasible. Pet sitters enable you to keep your pet in familiar surroundings while you are gone, and remove the guilt of having to leave them at the kennel. In-home care is less stressful to your pet, especially cats, and can provide individual care particularly where daily medication or special diet is required.

How to pick the right one?

Look for reliability. Call your veterinarian, groomer and pet owning friends for recommendations. Make sure your sitters have some basic knowledge of animal health and behaviour. Ask how long they've been in business and if they have pets of their own. Ask for references from other clients. Find out if the service carries insurance and if their staff are bonded. An introduction to your pet is recommended to see how everyone gets along.

As the pet owner, it's your responsibility to tell them everything they'll need to know about your pet. This includes medical history, eating habits and personality. Be sure to leave the number where you can be reached as well as an alternative contact. Your sitter will require the phone number of your veterinarian and may ask for written authorization to take your pet to the hospital if necessary. If your pet is insured, be sure to leave your policy information and company telephone number.

Although there is no way to discuss everything that may happen in your absence, taking the time to talk about basic plans will make you feel more comfortable. After all, you are entrusting the pet sitter with your beloved pet.

When it comes to health care for your pet, you don't want to have to compromise. However, the cost of advanced treatment can be high. Pet insurance can help ease the financial burden, helping owners make an immediate decision to proceed with expensive testing or treatment.
