It Could
Happen to your Pet!
Each year
across Canada thousands of pets are lost -- very few of these
are ever reunited with their owners or even adopted into new homes.
Before your pet goes missing, take a few minutes to read through
this list of tips.
How to
prevent your pet from going missing:
-
Provide
your pet with identification. Collars and ID tags are good
for immediate identification but can be easily removed or
caught on shrubs. Tattoos and microchips are permanent and
cannot be removed or easily altered.
-
Spaying
or neutering at a young age can help to deter the wandering
instinct.
-
Obedience
training will help bring your pets under your control and
decrease the desire to escape.
-
When walking
or transporting your pets have them restrained on a leash
or in a pet carrier.
-
Confining
your pet indoors or in a fenced yard will help, but escapes
can happen, so always have a back up plan.
What to
do if your pet goes missing:
-
Don't
Panic!
-
Take a
few minutes to determine where you pet was last seen.
-
Check
your neighbourhood first
-
Make flyers
and post them in highly visible areas
-
Check
with local animal shelters and veterinarians
-
Place
an ad in local newspapers
-
Consider
offering a reward
-
Don't
give up!
Hopefully
your pet will never get lost, but if it does these tips will help
