Pets
The bags are
packed, the tickets are bought, the children are in the car…and
Spot? Everything is prepared except for what to do with Spot.
Boarding kennels and pet sitters are alternatives, but when you
enjoy the company of your pet you need not leave him behind. Before
including your pet in your vacation plans, be sure that the trip
is something he'll enjoy too. Consider his age, health and personality.
Before you
go, take your pet to your veterinarian for any vaccinations, health
certificate, and proof of rabies inoculations. Depending on where
you are traveling, your pet may also require heartworm testing
and medication, flea prevention and possibly a vaccination against
Lyme disease. If your pet requires medication, make sure it is
contained and clearly labeled. Be sure to get a copy of the prescription,
just in case. Also, if your pet is insured, remember to bring
a claim form with you.
To ensure
your pet will be welcome at all your planned destinations, call
ahead and verify their policies about pets. Never leave Spot alone
in your room. He can hurt himself or damage furniture. Be sure
to let the maid know there is a pet in the room, who may try to
make a bid for freedom. Remember, you and your pet are ambassadors
for travelers to come. Be sure you're good ones.
When it comes
to health care for your pet, you don't want to have to compromise.
However, the cost of advanced treatment can be high. Pet insurance
can help ease the financial burden, helping owners make an immediate
decision to proceed with expensive testing or treatment. If you'd
